Blue Gum Farm
Zoustar is the sire of Blue Gum Farm’s quality filly Lot 508 in the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, out of a winning Not A Single Doubt daughter of Gr1 winner Ofcourseican, closely related to Gr1 placed Persan, winner of over $1.7 million. Proudly boasting a great strike rate from their two year-old runners this season, Blue Gum Farm looks set for another big year; with the historic Victorian farm continuing to flourish under the expert and passionate guidance of Sean and Cathy Dingwall and Jason and Mel Stenning. 20% of the Blue Gum yearlings sold at sales over the last four years are stakes horses with Sean Dingwall very happy to have the farm's sizeable legacy continue.
"The farm just keeps producing good horses," he said, "and I can't see that changing anytime soon. The country itself provides a great foundation for horses and we haven't changed the way we do things; it worked for the Campbell family for 40 years and hopefully that will continue another 40 years for us!" Dingwall has been enjoying cheering on last year's Blue Gum graduates with two of the first four being winners; the Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeoman trained Bliss Bomb leading throughout for a smart win at Seymour in mid-January whilst Return To Conquer has created a big impression in New Zealand.
The Group 1 bound Te Akau Stallion Breeding Syndicate horse has won his first two starts in convincing style, the Counties Challenge Stakes-Listed, 1100m in late November and the Colin Jillings 2YO Classic-Gr3, 1200m in early February. Queen Of Clubs is also showing nice ability, well regarded by Gary Portelli who has the ATC Sires' Produce Stakes-Gr1, 1400m and the Champagne Stakes-Gr1, 1600m in mind for the Maurice filly who was sound to the line contesting nice pre-Christmas juvenile races in Sydney.
Last year's Premier was a good sale for Blue Gum with a top price of $925,000 for the Pinecliff Racing owned, Anthony and Sam Freedman trained Snitzel filly Don't Mind Winning. Other members of that draft also ended up in great homes, trained by the likes of Waterhouse and Bott, Joe Pride, Moody and Coleman, Lindsay Park, Lindsey Smith, Symon Wilde, Tony and Calvin McEvoy and Busuttin and Young (the Cranbourne jump-out winner Centu Cavaddi in their hands).
The 2023 draft was the first for the new Blue Gum owners and what a nice bunch of three year-olds they are; such as the dual Listed winner Bold Bastille, the city winner Stagnum, the exciting Tuned and the lightly raced and promising gallopers Unleeshing and Great Brazen. The 2025 draft is another ripper offering a variety of stallions. There are a number of highlights including Lot 102, a Street Boss filly who Dingwall describes as being "the best bred yearling of our sale." The bay is a sister to the Moody and Coleman trained dual stakes winner She Dances who has won seven of her 17 starts.
She is also a half-sister to that mare's promising stakes placed stablemate Bridal Waltz out of a daughter of the Pope family's wonderful mare Innovation Girl. The winner of ten of her 15 starts including four at Group level and three in Listed company, Innovation Girl produced seven winners from eight foals including the stakes winners Ideas Man and Chloe In Paris, the latter being the dam of Bold Bastille. A Zoustar is always going to be a highlight and Lot 508, "a really nice filly," is a daughter of a two times winning daughter of the Coolmore Classic-Gr1, 1500m winner Ofcourseican whose handsome son Persan won the Bart Cummings Handicap-Gr3, 2500m, was third in the Caulfield Cup-Gr1 among 8 wins for a total of over $1.7 million.
Lot 31 from the first crop of Wooded is much admired with Dingwall describing the son of a three-quarter sister to the dual Listed winning sprinter Excelorada as "a beautiful horse."
Dingwall is also a big fan of Lot 541, as So You Think colt; the first foal for the Auraria Stakes-Gr3, 1800m winner Tyche Goddess and he also likes the stock of Exceedance, taking two of those to Oaklands including Lot 472 from the family of the Group 1 galloper Buckaroo. Dingwall liked the smaller, neater Too Darn Hots at the Magic Millions and he thinks Lot 264 really fits the mould in regards to what fans of the sire are looking for.
"He is a typical Too Darn hot, a really nice horse" he said of the colt whose dam is a half-sister to Dundeel. Too Darn Hot is proving a sensation in Australia, having been Champion first season sire in 23/24 and currently leading the second season list from a quality field of contenders.
