Yulong Stud
With a focus on the upgrading of their stock, it is little wonder that Yulong has enjoyed such success on the track, their stellar results last spring a reward for their commitment to the local industry. And now success in the sales ring is flowing, at the Magic Millions Yulong yearlings fetching up to $1.8 million with an average of $410,000, the fourth best of the sale. Already five sold by Yulong last year have been winners including the Inglis Nursery-RL, 1000m winner Within The Law and their Melbourne Premier graduates have been showing up well at the jump-outs and trials.
They are in good hands; in the stables of Waterhouse and Bott, Chris Waller, Grahame Begg, Ciaron Maher, Robbie Griffiths, Matthew Smith, Joe Pride, Busuttin and Young and Moody and Coleman. It's a big draft for Yulong, one which sees their stallions Written Tycoon, Alabama Express, Grunt, Tagaloa and Lucky Vega well represented. Last season earning his ninth Champion Victorian Sire title, Written Tycoon (who had last year's second highest priced Premier colt sold by Yulong to Peter Moody for $525,000) plays a particularly strong hand with 20 earmarked for Oaklands.
"He has been a fantastic stallion for Victoria," said Yulong's Chief Operating Officer Sam Fairgray, "and his progeny have sold very well at this sale with VOBIS providing a lot of positives." Two particularly attractive Written Tycoons are out of stakes winners, Lot 25 the second foal (her first by Lope de Vega fetched $340,000 last year) for the Listed winner Altea and Lot 272 a daughter of the French Listed winner Lilac Fairy. Half siblings to the Group 1 winners Preferment and Lyre are other highlights for Written Tycoon.
Preferment won four Group 1 races whilst his sister Rezoned won a Group 3 race. Lot 68 is a colt out of their dam Better Alternative whose sire Flying Spur boasts an excellent record with Written Tycoon; 29 winners from 32 runners including the Group 1 sprinter Booker and four other stakes winners.
Written Tycoon is also building an outstanding record with Street Cry mares; five winners amongst six runners including the Danehill Stakes-Gr2, 1100m winner First Settler, who is an emerging talent for his sire. Lot 158 is out of the Street Cry mare Erato, dam of the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr1, 1200m winner Lyre. This is a lovely page, Erato being a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Impending out of the dual Group 1 winner Mnemosyne.
Also of interest are fillies from families that have produced proven stallions; Lot 317 out of a sister to Extreme Choice, Lot 389 out of a three-quarter sister to Invader and Lot 394 out of a half-sister to Flying Artie. Tagaloa has made an encouraging start and Yulong have 15 in their draft. Amongst them is a half-brother (Lot 187) to the Australasian Oaks-Gr1, 2005m winner Princess Jenni, a son (192) of the dual Group winner Gregers, a colt (Lot 408) out of a sister to Alabama Express and a daughter (Lot 481) of dual Group 1 winner Soriano.
"We've had a lot of positive feedback on Tagaloa," Fairgray said, "and we are looking forward to the next few months as his progeny come to the fore." Lucky Vega is another up-and-comer (a stakes winner and a stakes placegetter amongst his first four runners) and he has ten for sale including fillies from the families of Sunlight (Lot 483) and Imperatriz (Lot 796). "He has made a super start. He was a very good two year-old and he is passing on that speed." Alabama Express is a year further into his career and what a great job he is doing with three stakes winners amongst his first 26 winners including the VRC Oaks-Gr1, 2500m heroine Treasurethe Moment.

Yulong is taking nine to the Premier including fillies out of half-sisters to the Group 1 winners Veloce Bella (Lot 8) and Secret Agenda (Lot 52). "He continues to produce nice horses," Fairgray said of the stallion who has been supported by books of over 220 at each of his last two seasons.
LUCKY VEGA is an emerging s Yulong who will offer 10 lots b talented son of the great Lope Seven Grunt yearlings, including a daughter of the spe Tawteen (Lot 520) will also have fans. "Grunt is knocki and trainers like them. And he is building a profile in H nice winners." A great selection of stallions from other studs are also r the one and only Frankel, Zoustar, I Am Invincible, Ho Kanaloa, Kingman, Maurice, Per Incanto, Pinatubo, Pi Boom, Stay Inside and Toronado.
A Zoustar half-sister (Lot 129) to the Group 2 filly Mok Oaks winner Dear Demi is one of the sale's highlights Frankel, Lot 333.
