Stay Inside

The Gr1 Golden Slipper’s reputation as a sire making race is well established and with only five colts winning it in the last ten years, the 2021 winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice-Nothin Leica Storm, by Anabaa) belongs to a select group of horses.

Being a champion two year-old and a Golden Slipper winner by an extraordinarily elite sire, we have high hopes for his future. The quality of his stock are exciting, they’ve outperformed our expectations in the ring so far, and they are physically very attractive horses and in the mould of Extreme Choice. We are bullish about his prospects,” said Newgate Farm’s Henry Field. Turning for home in the Gr1 Golden Slipper of 2021, Profiteer, Glistening, Home Affairs and Stay Inside were the leading bunch with Stay Inside the widest of all.

Stay Inside surged to be four lengths clear of the rest of the field half-way down the straight, while Gr2 Todman Stakes winner Anamoe was flying from last, but Stay Inside held off the challenge to win by 1.8 lengths with Ingratiating the best of the rest. The field included future Gr1 winner Home Affairs, Captivant, Artorius, and Anamoe who would go on to win the Gr1 Sires’ Produce Stakes at his next start and accumulate nine Gr1 wins in his fantastic racing career.

Stay Inside came from humble beginnings, a $60,000 weanling when sold by Kingstar Farm at the 2019 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale to Newgate Bloodstock. Newgate sold him at the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $200,000 to Freedman Brothers and Rick Connolly Bloodstock, and he was sent to be trained by Richard and Michael Freedman. Newgate Farm bought back into the ownership after Stay Inside won his first two starts, and his large group of owners were: Newgate SF, CC Pickford, MD Skinner, MJ Davidson, C Lamond, JA Wilson, G O T G Racing, L Myers, SA Aboud, M Barakat, MJ Blundell, SA Tilley, M Pond, K Wilson, China Horse Club Racing, Horse Ventures, Go Bloodstock Australia, Grant Lowe Bloodstock, and MD Shaw & Corumbene Ascot Hamman.

A trial winner in mid-January, Stay Inside won his first two starts in Sydney, then ran an unlucky fourth in the Gr2 Todman Stakes behind Anamoe, Profiteer, and Home Affairs, before heading to the Gr1 Golden Slipper at his fourth start. Stay Inside sustained some minor foot issues but he returned as a spring three year-old to run fifth in both the Gr3 San Domenico Stakes and Gr2 Run To The Roses Stakes, before it was determined that he was too valuable to risk given that his trainers were still managing his issues, and so he was retired to stud.

As expected for a Golden Slipper winner, Stay Inside has been popular in his first three seasons at stud covering 189 mares in 2022 at a fee of $77,000 and another 152 in his second season. Newgate Farm dropped his fee for 2024 to $55,000 and he covered His first yearlings have been popular with 34 sold at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale at an average of $295,147 with his top lot making seven figures for vendor Eureka Stud.

The James Harron Colt Partnership along with Tony Fung Colts spent $1 million on Lot 216, the colt from city winning mare Bleu Zebra (I Am Invincible) who is a half-sister to Listed winner Fox Swift from the family of Champion 3YO Sprinter in NZ Pay My Bail. Four other yearlings made $500,000 at that sale, which was a strong start for the emerging stallion. His stock have been bought by top trainers and good judges such as Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Ciaron Maher, Annabel Neasham, Rob Arhibald, Sheamus Mills, Bjorn Baker Racing, James Harron, Michael Freedman, McEvoy Mitchell Racing, Chris Waller, Brad Widdup, Moody Racing, Anthony Freedman, John O’Shea, and syndicators Proven Thoroughbreds, Star Thoroughbreds, Dalziel Racing, and Dynamic Syndications.

“Pretty much every smart buyer in the market was on them at the Magic Millions Gold Coast, and they have ended up in the right stables, but ultimately, it’s the winning post that matters and now they have to do the job on the track. They are the right type of athletes and they should have good futures,” said Field. Stay Inside is one of four Gr1 winners for the “statistically superior” Extreme Choice. Winner of the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at two and the Gr1 AJ Moir Stakes at three, the son of Not A Single Doubt retired to stud in 2017, but his first book of 118 mares resulted in only 48 live foals.

His well documented struggles with infertility have resulted in only 282 live foals across his first seven crops. From this small base, Extreme Choice has sired (at end of January 2025), 112 runners, 81 winners, and an impressive 13 stakes winners. In the spring of 2024, he became just the second stallion in history to sire both a Gr1 Golden Slipper winner and a Gr1 Melbourne Cup winner when Knight’s Choice won the 2024 Cup.

Not his own pedigree — this is the grid from the international bloodlines pages, dropped in to show it works anywhere.

The only other stallion to do that was Sir Tristram, a multiple Champion Sire and at one point, the world record holder for number of Gr1 winners (since surpassed by Danehill and then Galileo), who achieved the feat with 1987 Golden Slipper winner Marauding, and Melbourne Cup winners Gurner’s Lane, Empire Rose, and Brew.

Extreme Choice’s two other Gr1 winners are Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner Espiona and She’s Extreme who won the Gr1 Champagne Stakes and Gr1 Victoria Oaks. With only 13 stakes winners, the numbers aren’t large enough to draw many conclusions on crosses that have worked well for Extreme Choice, and only two of his stakes winners share the same damsire, being Knight’s Choice and Tiger Of Malay, who are both out of More Than Ready mares.

Stay Inside is out of an Anabaa mare and Anabaa is a son of Danzig, who won the Gr1 July Cup and Gr1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Six of Extreme Choice’s stakes winners are out of mares from the Danzig sire line, with their damsires being Hinchinbrook, Stratum, Anabaa, Stryker, War Front, and So Secret. Given that Stay Inside already carries Danzig through Anabaa, the other damsires of Extreme Choice’s stakes winners may provide interesting targets for broodmare owners, and these are the aforementioned More Than Ready, as well as O’Reilly, Galileo, Bel Esprit, Show A Heart, and Johannesburg.

Stay Inside represents the first of several sons of Extreme Choice who have retired to stud, with Tiger Of Malay, Extreme Warrior, Don Corleone, and Extro all joining him in the stallion barn. Stay Inside’s dam Nothin Leica Storm hasn’t been very fertile, missing five times, and having only four live foals since retiring to stud in 2015 with her latest being born in 2024. She has produced two winners, the other being Stormy Revolution (Russian Revolution).

A winner over 1150m, Nothin Leica Storm is out of city winner Nothin Leica (Nothin Leica Dane), who is a half-sister to the stakes placed dam of Listed winner Wonderful Lass, and the dam of Gr1 winner Wonderful World. Further back, this is the family of triple Gr1 winning sprinter Spartacus. Stay Inside has three lines of Danzig, two through Danehill, via Not A Single Doubt and Nothin Leica Dane, and another of Danzig via Anabaa.

It is said that performance makes a pedigree, and Stay Inside has certainly upgraded his female family. Being a winner of the Golden Slipper has afforded him many opportunities at stud, and the odds are that he’ll continue the trend of successful sires coming out of that race. BBBB
